Groups and Organizations within the Onaqui Community
American Wild Horse Campaign
This group organized the April 5th 2019 rally in Salt Lake City where they met with both the Bureau of Land Management and the Wild Horses of America Foundation. During their visit, they urged public involvement and organization. Since then, they have bought and provided us (OCF) with a web-browser based database app that is the basis for our catalogue. This app allows us to record and search for each horse in the Onaqui herd, thus it is invaluable information both to get an accurate count on the horses and to provide the Wild Horses of America Foundation information so they may strengthen their PZP program. You may train to enter horses into this database here.
Additionally, before the 2021 round up, AWHC facilitated the BLM working with OCF to assist in identification of the captured horses and their family bands. The BLM was able to consider OCF’s recommendations to return horses based on genetic viability. This maintains the integrity of social bands and natural age, sex, and herd structures. Further, it protects older horses while giving consideration for the placement of special needs horses instead of euthanasia for animals not suffering from severe or life-threatening ailments.
AWHC has also partnered with Western Watersheds Project to propose a comprehensive management plan for the Onaqui HMA going forward after the 2021 round up.
Bureau of Land Management
This is the official government organization responsible for the management of all wild horse herds, including those within the Onaqui Herd Management Area. They are responsible for maintaining a healthy herd both genetically, physically, and behaviorally as well as maintaining a healthy rangeland within those Herd Management Areas. Our herd is managed on the local level by the Salt Lake City Field Office and on a broad scale by the Wild Horse and Burro Program: https://www.blm.gov/programs/wild-horse-and-burro.
Wild Horses of America Foundation
To help control the population of the Onaqui, the Wild Horses of America works directly with the Bureau of Land Management to administer PZP to wild horses in the Onaqui HMA. Their website provides information on PZP inoculations that have been given since 2015 and also provides information on PZP that was given prior to 2015 during BLM gathers: http://wildhorses.org/onaqui/.
